Sometimes, death is an unexpected slap in the face. And sometimes, it's a long, winding process. But it's always inevitable. On ‘This Side of the Grass’, host Val Amsden shares personal stories about loss and grief, plus practical advice to prepare for both.

Losing her mother in her 20s after a long battle with cancer, recently navigating the unexpected death of her brother, and still serving as the primary caregiver for her 98 year old grandmother, Val has a rich perspective on death, dying, and living out our days with intention. Partly to process her own grief, and partly to provide a safe space for these uncomfortable conversations, she launched her first podcast, ‘This Side of the Grass’ in March 2024.

"No one wants to talk about their own mortality. But it's so, so important to have these conversations while we can. It's a gift to our loved ones if we're the first to go, and a blessing to understand their wishes if we are left behind." Honest, direct, and immensely practical, Val hopes these episodes remove the stigma from tough topics while providing rich conversation, clear action steps, and a healing place for all who grieve.

When she's not in front of the mic, Val delights in cheering her children on at a myriad of sporting events, coaching and training at her beloved local gym, managing her family’s business and farm entities, and volunteering with various community organizations. She lives in Burnsville, Minnesota with her husband Doug, their 3 children, and their rescue dog, Hugo.
